Although having classes and jobs take up a lot of time, it is important to remember to still relax and be involved in activities that are fun! I have 3 of these activities.
Start To Finish is a club that was founded by me, along with two other friends of mine. We want to help other people learn. After doing some research, we realized that the high school graduation rate in the metro Atlanta area was not that high. In an effort to better this, a college-high school mentoring program has started. For more information, please see my blog and the Start To Finish website.
One of my biggest decisions for coming to Georgia Tech was influenced by a recruitment program that was put on by UWAB. UWAB is a great way to meet other girls that are in the College of Computing (CoC). We attend conferences and workshops, put on CoC events, and just have fun together. This year, I was elected as Secretary for the women@CC, and I was also asked to co-chair it for next semester. I am really excited to be offered this opportunity, and although I declined it (because I was Head TA and had research work to focus on), I essentially ended up being the Recruitment Chair, Secretary, and Webmaster all at once. Over Summer 2008, another member and I re-did the entire Women@CC website. Be sure to check out our new website!
After living in freshman dorms my first year at Georgia Tech, I moved into suites. In Harris, as my friends and I lived the suite life, I realized that I wanted to help create more fun events for our dorm. So, I was elected treasurer for our hall council, and I was able to help put on events for our suite, which has almost 100 people. As treasurer, I managed and dispersed funds for the hall throughout the entire year.
Throughout my freshman year at college, I was also involved with the College of Computing Freshman Activities Board. We worked with the Student Activities Board to put on many different joint events. We also planned a programming competition for local high schools, as well as other activities. It was a lot of fun, and I have stayed involved with many other College of Computing activities for the same reason.
